Sahar Amer, Medieval Arab Lesbians and Lesbian-Like Women (2009)
Thanks sqbr—this article is EXCELLENT. It’s also not safe for work (textually). Here is a sweet bit—
As a matter of fact, the origin of lesbianism, according to popular anecdotes in the Arabic literary tradition, is regularly traced back forty years before the emergence of male homosexuality to an intercultural, interfaith love affair between an Arab woman and a Christian woman in pre-Islamic Iraq. The earliest extant erotic treatise in Arabic, Jawami` al-ladhdha (Encyclopedia of Pleasure), dates to about the end of the tenth century and was written by a certain Abul Hasan Ali ibn Nasr al-Katib.7 It tells us the story of the first lesbian couple, the enduring love between Hind Bint al-Nu`man, the Christian daughter of the last Lakhmid king of Hira in the seventh century, and Hind Bint al-Khuss al-Iyadiyyah from Yamama in Arabia, known as al-Zarqa’ and reportedly the first lesbian in Arab history: “She [Hind] was so loyal to al-Zarqa’ that when the latter died, she cropped her hair, wore black clothes, rejected worldly pleasures, vowed to God that she would lead an ascetic life until she passed away and, as a result, she built a monastery which was named after her, on the outskirts of Kufa. When she died, she was buried at the monastery gate. Her loyalty was then an example for poets to write about. There are also other women who continued to shed tears on their beloved ones’ graves until they passed away.”

These carved stone figures, their eyes wide with awe and their hands clasped in reverence, were placed in Mesopotamian temples by worshippers to stand in perpetual prayer on their behalf before the god or goddess to whom the sanctuary was dedicated. When the temples were renovated, those statues that had fallen into disrepair or outlived the terms of their dedication were carefully buried within the building.

Carlos says he’s done nothing but try to do what’s right and obey the law. He’s been a legal U.S. citizen since 1988.
“I get my insurance and everything, because I know, I need to respect the laws,” says Estrada wiping tears from his face. “I tell my kids every time, you got to do this, you got to do that, we need to be good citizens.”
He was told he had been under surveillance by ICE agents for three years and was showed a picture of himself at his job in 2010.
Earlier today we got this ask, and aside from that beautiful answer from our contributor latinagabi, we also got all of these fantastic asks from our followers telling us why they identify as Latin@:
Those are some great answers! Ladies, please keep telling us why you identify as Latina. We love reading your answers!
Most of Hong Kong’s sexual minority employees face discrimination in the workplace, threatening the city’s competitiveness as a financial hub, according to a study released Thursday.
In a poll sponsored by British bank Barclays, 85 percent of 628 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) staff said they had experienced a “negative impact” from working in a “non-inclusive workplace”.
71 percent said they had to lie about their personal life, while 53 percent reported being “exhausted, depressed and stressed” by attitudes at work.
Four in ten said they were unhappy in their job, while 22 percent said they had left or considered leaving a job due to prejudice, according to the survey released by non-profit organisation Community Business on the annual International Day Against Homophobia.
Richard Seeley, a senior manager at Barclays in Hong Kong, said both the city and its business rival Singapore were losing out in attracting overseas talent as they do not recognise same-sex relationships.
“It is not good for Hong Kong if the environment is not inclusive,” he said. “Both cities are missing the opportunity to become more competitive.”
Critics claim the difficulty in obtaining a visa for a same-sex partner deters many potential expats from coming to the city.
Hong Kong decriminalised homosexuality in 1991 but rights groups have urged the government to do more by enacting laws to ban discrimination against the LGBT community.
An Israeli court on Wednesday found a US-born Jewish settler guilty of murdering two Palestinians and convicted him on two counts of attempted murder.
Jack Teitel, a 41-year-old extreme right religious activist, was found guilty of the killings in 1997 of a bus driver and a shepherd, both Palestinians.
He was also found guilty of two attempted murders, making and illegally possessing weapons and incitement to violence, according to the Jerusalem district court decision, a copy of which was seen by AFP.
The court ruled that Teitel was mentally competent when the offences he was accused of were carried out, and rejected defence lawyers’ arguments that their client had not been mentally stable and was therefore not guilty.
Teitel, who lived in the Shvut Rachel settlement in the West Bank, had been branded by the Israeli popular press as a “Jewish terrorist.”
He said he carried out a bomb attack in 2008 on the home of leading leftwing Israeli professor Zeev Sternhell, wounding him.
He also admitted sending a parcel bomb to a couple belonging to a Jewish sect that embraces Jesus, wounding their 15-year-old son.
Teitel, who immigrated from the United States, was also known for his hate of homosexuality, calling for the murder of “sodomites.”
